HOW OUR NURSES CAN HELP YOU
Nurse Services
At Forsyth Medical, our nurses provide a wide range of clinical services that support your everyday health needs. From wound care and immunisations to health checks, screening tests and treatment advice, our nursing team helps ensure you receive timely, professional care. Below is an overview of the common services our nurses can assist with.
Blood test – Blood can be taken here for a charge or alternatively you can go to any Awanui lab location for free.
Liquid nitrogen – Treatment to freeze off lesions like a wart, verruca or skin tag. You may be asked to have your skin check by the GP first to determine if this is the appropriate treatment.
Cold/flu – Common cold symptoms can be seen by the nurse for advice, if symptoms are more serious or you have been unwell for a long period of time you may need to see the GP.
Head lice – We can check the scalp for lice and their eggs and recommend treatment and advice on when to re-treat. Due to lice being spread through close contact, we can provide information on how to keep the household safe.
Insect bites – Most incest bites settle on their own. However, if you have concerns or the itching/swelling is bothersome we can offer treatments to help ease this.
Minor burns/wounds – Dressings can be applied to minor skin issues. The nurses will first assess the burn/wound, if it is requiring stiches, you will be referred elsewhere.
Removal of stitches/staples – We safely remove stitches and check that your wound is healing well.
Gastro (stomach bug) – Assessment and advice for stomach bugs, vomiting and diarrhoea.
UTI – Assessment and urine testing for urinary tract infection, treatment if required.
Hay fever – Discussion treatment options to relieve seasonal allergies.
HPV swabs – the self-swabs can be given out by the nurse to test for HPV.
Cold cores – Advice and treatment of cold sores.
Annual diabetes reviews – This yearly assessment includes a blood test, urine test, foot check, lifestyle advice and retinal screening referrals.
Immunisations –Scheduled childhood and adult immunisations to protect against illnesses at any age.
Minor injuries – Sprains and other minor injuries can be triaged by the nurse, they may result in simple at home care advice while some are required to be seen by a GP for an x-ray referral etc.

How to Choose a Family Doctor in Christchurch: A Guide for Burnside, Bryndwr & Northwest Christchurch
HOW TO CHOOSE A FAMILY DOCTOR IN CHRISTCHURCH: A GUIDE FOR BURNSIDE, BRYNDWR & NORTHWEST CHRISTCHURCH
Choosing a family doctor is one of the most important healthcare decisions you can make. Whether you’re new to Christchurch, moving suburbs, or simply looking for a practice that better suits your needs, finding the right GP makes a big difference to your long-term health and peace of mind. If you live in Burnside, Bryndwr, Fendalton, Ilam, Avonhead, or the wider Northwest Christchurch area, this guide will help you understand what to look for when choosing a family doctor — and why so many local families choose Forsyth Medical.
✅ UNDERSTANDING HEALTHCARE OPTIONS IN CHRISTCHURCH
Christchurch has a wide range of medical centres and general practices spread across the city. While having options is a good thing, it can also make it harder to know which practice is right for you. Some clinics focus on high-volume walk-in visits, while others prioritise long-term family care and continuity with the same doctor. When choosing a GP in Christchurch, location, appointment access, clinical approach, and personal connection all matter.
✅ WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A GOOD FAMILY DOCTOR
When selecting a GP or medical practice, consider the following:
Continuity of care – being able to see the same doctor over time
Preventative health focus – not just treating illness, but supporting long-term wellbeing
Women’s, men’s, and child health services
Chronic condition management
Accessibility – parking, location, transport, and ease of booking
Clear communication – explaining your health in a way you understand
A strong relationship with your doctor leads to better health outcomes, earlier detection of issues, and greater confidence in your care decisions.
✅ BURNSIDE, BRYNDRWR & NORTHWEST CHRISTCHURCH – A LOCAL HEALTHCARE HUB
Burnside, Bryndwr, Fendalton, Ilam and Avonhead are among Christchurch’s most family-friendly and well-connected suburbs. With schools, universities, parks and growing residential communities, demand for quality, relationship-based general practice care continues to grow in this part of the city.
For many residents in Northwest Christchurch and along Grahams Road, convenience is important — but so is trust. A local medical practice that understands your area, your family, and your health history becomes a long-term partner in your wellbeing.
✅ WHY MANY FAMILIES CHOOSE FORSYTH MEDICAL
Forsyth Medical has built a strong reputation for providing comprehensive, compassionate primary healthcare to individuals and families across Christchurch. Patients value:
A patient-first approach
Long-term continuity with their GP
A friendly, experienced healthcare team
Support for all life stages — from children to older adults
Women’s health, men’s health, and preventative care
